“First impressions are lasting impressions”
One cannot overestimate the importance of a positive first impression. Yes, it is possible to change someone's opinion of you if you make a less than favorable impression on them, but it takes a great deal more effort than getting it right the first time. Over the years, I have seen hundreds of employees on their first day on the job and it is always that first impression of them that lasts the longest. If you make a negative first impression, it can actually change the way people interact with you and then of course, change the way you will likely interact with them, causing a snowball effect that can make for a difficult time.
Even beyond a first day on the job there are many “firsts” in which we find ourselves that deserve our attention to the impression we are making. Whether it is meeting a new client, a first date, a job interview, meeting your significant other's family, working with a new vendor or even introducing yourself to your next-door neighbor, we could all probably use a refresher on how to make sure the first impression we leave new people is the right one.
1. Be Yourself, But Yourself On Your Best Day
Remember when mom said that you needed to be on your best behavior, first impressions are a lot like that. It's good to be yourself, but be your best self and that is how you'll likely be remembered. Think about the things that you find off-putting and don’t forget that in our digital age, it's important to put phones away and give people your undivided attention.
2. Be On Time
Late is late, and no one cares why you're late, especially the first time your meeting. When you're talking about important first meetings, like job interviews, your first day on the job, meeting a new client or even a first date, there is no good excuse for not being on time. We all know that traffic and wrong turns happen, so allow for extra time just in case.
3. Dress The Part
You don't need to wear a tuxedo to a job interview, but consider your appearance carefully. If it's a job interview, how are other people who work there likely to dress? If it's a date, the activity or setting can tell you a great deal about how to present yourself appropriately. The reality is appearance matters and things like clean and tidy clothes, careful grooming like a nice haircut and clean fingernails can convey the right information about you to new people.
4. Be Friendly And Positive
Never underestimate the mileage you can get out of a warm smile and a little small talk. A friendly smile puts people at ease and a little conversation back and forth and break the ice and leave a lasting positive impression. Did you know a positive attitude is catching? If you can stay upbeat and solution focused even in difficult situations, people will always have something nice to say about you.
5. Project Confidence Even If You're A Little Nervous
Everyone gets anxious meeting new people, especially this the stakes are high like a job interview, first day on the job or even first date. You may not feel especially confident in these scenarios where you feel you're being judged, however a little body language can help you send the right message. Stand up straight make eye contact, greet someone with a handshake and smile.
