"People who work together will win, whether it be against complex football defenses, or the problems of modern society." --Vince Lombardi ??
With football season upon us, I have been thinking about the teams and how sometimes a team can just come together, get it done and make amazing things happen. Sure they have their off days like any other team but there is something different about how they work together. Other teams seem to struggle all season long, yes they get an occasional win but their performances are full of missed opportunities and wrong moves. Sometimes the very same team will have a big change in performance from one season to the next. Even if a few superstars really stand out, the truth is that all of the teams have incredibly talented players and every team has its faithful fans. So what's makes some teams different? What makes them better? It usually comes down to the coach.?
Every great team in history has been led by great coaches, individuals like Vince Lombardi, Bo Schembechler and Scotty Bowman. Coaches aren't just important in sports organizations, they are important on the job as well. A great coach can make a huge difference in both the day to day operations of an organization and its long term success. A lack of leadership can lead to so-so performance, customers who might not leave but aren't actually happy and employees who feel unmotivated, unappreciated and unled. Being a great coach isn't so different than being a good team player, the more you work at it the better you get and there is always more to learn but the best coaches consistently:
- Listen
- Lead by example
- Have a Vision & communicate it to the team
- Put the team first
- Spot talent-- understand what team members do best & help them do more of that
- Give team members opportunities to grow, develop & identify their talents
Some of the best coaches put a lot of their energy into teaching because they know that a well trained team is an effective team. Their real reward is to see others succeed as they step back and let the team take their place on the winner's pedestal.A great coach brings a team together and gets behind them so they can lead themselves to solve problems, be more productive and have fun playing a good game.
