The vernal equinox was at the end of March so we are well into spring, but at least here in Michigan, it has just started to feel like we put winter behind us. Spring is a natural time of renewal, growth and the casting off of the old, tired and worn out. Spring-cleaning has long been considered the optimal time to clean house and put things in order for the remainder of the year.
As a leader or business owner, spring offers a good time to clean your own house. I don’t mean washing the windows or taking out that stack of papers, I mean you. Much like the beginning of the year, spring offers a good time to assess your goals and take stock in what you are doing, what’s working and what isn’t and clean up any areas that might need it.
Speaking of goals, have you made sufficient progress on the goals you set for yourself at the beginning of the year? If you haven’t, are there things in the way keeping you from accomplishing them? Have circumstances changed making an old plan less relevant? Have any parts of your work or personal life shifted enough that you need to entirely reevaluate your old plan? Or do things just need a few tweaks to get back on track?
Just as spring-cleaning offers a set time to get rid of old house junk you no longer need, it’s also a good time to clear the ‘junk’ from your head. We all hang onto old things we should get rid of and sometime these things include old behaviors and ways of thinking or behaving that don’t really work for us anymore. When you do the work of clearing away the old and reorganizing what’s left, you press reset and move forward lighter and more assuredly toward the goals you have set for yourself and your team.
